When Do Babies Start Playing with Toys?

Play begins almost from birth. Babies play from the moment they are born, exploring the world through their senses. Newborns may not handle toys in the same way older children do, but they learn through looking, listening, sucking, and touching. Early toy play might mean following a mobile with their eyes or grasping a soft rattle during tummy time. Over the first year, babies’ play skills grow rapidly – from reflexive swiping to purposeful exploration – and toys evolve from high-contrast visuals to interactive blocks and push-along cars.
