As a parent, there’s nothing more important to you than your child’s happiness and well-being. You want them to succeed in life, and you’ll do whatever it takes to help them get there. One of the most important milestones in any young person’s life is their prom night – a time when they can celebrate their accomplishments and look forward to their bright future. As a parent, you can play a big role in helping your daughter get ready for prom night and making it an even better experience by doing just a few simple but key things.
Help her pick out a dress
One of the main things your daughter will want to feel confident about on prom night is her dress. Help her pick something she loves, that makes her feel beautiful and confident. A good way to do this is to go shopping for dresses together – let her try on different styles and colors until she finds the perfect one. Taking a cue from the inspiration behind any Jovani prom dress, you want to help your daughter choose something unique that will fit her personal style. Additionally, you want to let her explore different options that will accentuate her best features and make her feel great about herself. For example, if she has dark brown eyes, a dress with a rose hint will really make them stand out. Young people sometimes tend to follow trends more than their true personal preferences, and while that’s fine as well, you might want to gently encourage them to find something that truly represents them and makes them feel beautiful on the inside as well as the outside.
Offer to do her hair and makeup
Another thing your daughter will want to feel confident about on prom night is her appearance. If she’s not comfortable doing her own hair and makeup, offer to do it for her. As a mom, you probably know all about how big events can cause stress, as well as the fact that one of the best remedies for that involves pampering – so why not do it with your daughter as well! This can be a really fun bonding experience between the two of you, and she’ll be grateful for your help in looking her best. You can make it even more exciting by treating her to a skincare day, and trying different makeup and hairstyle looks before the big day so that she can choose her favorite one. Whether you go all out with glamourous curls and a bold lip or a simple but elegant updo with a natural makeup look, she’ll love feeling like a princess on prom night.
Go shopping for shoes and accessories together
While the dress is definitely the star of the show when it comes to prom night, accessories and shoes are a close second. Help your daughter pick out a pair of shoes that will make her feel confident and fabulous. Again, you can go shopping together and try on different styles until she finds the perfect ones. If she has her heart set on high heels, make sure to get her some comfortable ones that she can dance in – there’s nothing worse than having to sit out the fun because your feet hurt! You might want to consider getting some insoles for her shoes as well, to make sure she’s able to enjoy the whole night. Along with shoes, picking out the right jewelry and handbag can really complete her look. Simple but elegant earrings and a bracelet are always a good choice, and a small clutch or beaded bag will add just the right touch of glamour.
Talk about expectations
One of the most important things you can do as a parent is to talk to your daughter about her expectations for prom night. Is she looking to just have a good time with her friends, or does she want to go all out and look like a princess? You’ll also want to make sure that both of you are on the same page when it comes to curfew, expectations for behavior, and anything else that might be important. This is a big night for her, but it’s also an important opportunity for you to talk about the things that are important to you as a parent and rules in general. Prom is a time to celebrate, but it’s also a time to be safe and responsible. Whether she’s going to prom with her group of friends, her significant other, or even both, make sure you both agree on what’s appropriate and what’s not. While it may be a bit tough to see your daughter growing up, you might also want to keep in mind that she’ll probably be going off to college soon – so give her some leeway when establishing the rules.
Give her plenty of time to prepare
The last thing you want to do is to put stress on your daughter in the days leading up to prom. Make sure she has plenty of time to get ready and try not to bombard her with too many requests in the days beforehand. If there are certain things you need her help with – like picking up her dress or dropping off the corsage – make sure to give her plenty of notice. This way, she’ll be able to relax and enjoy prom night without any last-minute worries. On the day of – let her skip her chores and relax. Prom is a big day, and she’s probably been working hard for it!
Take a lot of pictures
One of the best things about prom night is that you’ll have lots of pictures to look back on for years to come. Make sure you take plenty of pictures with your daughter, as well as with her friends and date. You’ll be glad you have them when she’s all grown up and looking back on her amazing prom night! Ask your daughter beforehand what she’s comfortable with, of course. If she likes having her picture taken, you can go all out, and take as many as you’d like. However, if she doesn’t really like being on camera, try to find a compromise where you just take a couple – one with the family, and the other with her date.
Prom night is a time to let loose and has some fun! Make sure your daughter knows that she can relax and have a good time without feeling guilty. She’s worked hard for this night, and she deserves to enjoy herself. Whether she’s dancing the night away or just hanging out with her friends, make sure you’re there to support her and have a good time too. By following these tips, you’ll be sure to make prom night a memorable one for both of you.
