Ever feel like you’re hitting your head against a wall when you’re trying to learn? Or you can’t stop yourself from being distracted because your mind wants to wander to social media or the television? It can be so frustrating when you need to study, but your brain simply doesn’t want to play ball. Or more accurately, your brain is too busy thinking about playing ball with your friends to actually remember anything…
Thankfully there is some good news. Just like every other muscle in your body, it needs to be exercised and trained so it can operate at peak levels of performance. With that in mind, here’s how you can enhance and improve the cognitive function of your brain.
Help your brain with some physical exercise
Physical exercise doesn’t just build up your muscles, it also sharpens your brain. Numerous studies have proven the link between regular physical activity and improved cognitive function. That’s because exercise increases the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain, providing brain cells with more nourishment. In other words, by regularly doing some kind of physical activity, you’re literally feeding your brain.
The good news is, it doesn’t really matter what type of exercise it is, as long as it’s for at least 30 minutes and you do it regularly. Don’t forget that while you’re doing this activity for better memory recall and enhanced cognitive skills, it will also have the added effect of improving your overall physical health as well!
Teach it somebody else
Students have been reading their study material out loud to themselves for generations because it can significantly improve their chance of remembering it all. More recently, people have realized that teaching the subject material to someone else can cause students to recall considerably more information. Researchers believe that tutoring someone else can ultimately increase their memory and enhance their learning as it forces them to understand it better.
Educating others requires an entirely different mindset with a more in-depth understanding of the subject than simply learning for your own understanding in order to pass an exam or write an essay. So find yourself a study partner willing to let you teach them about whatever subject you need to learn.
Brain training to learn new things
One of the most effective methods of ensuring your mind stays sharp is by learning something new. Whenever we try doing something new or different, our brain becomes engaged enough that it changes as required. All the synapses light up because it uses areas of our brain that are only used when learning new things.
Whether you try some cognitive brain games like chess, decide to learn a new language, complete an online career skills course, or any other type of training exercise, challenging your intellectual capacity in this way can only ever create good outcomes for your mind. By always learning new things, your brain will be constantly boosted, and your memory and recall have the best chance of improving consistently.
Create the right environment with minimal distractions
In order to encourage your brain to work at the most optimum level of capacity, you need to create the right learning environment as it will allow you to have a most favorable state of concentration. Because the only possible way new information can be stored in your long-term memory successfully for future recall, is by doing everything you can to ensure you’re always paying complete attention to your studies.
In order to avoid distractions, diversions, or any other cognitive overloads, make sure there will be no possible interruptions by closing your door, turning off the television, putting your phone on silent, and muting all other notifications. Remember that it only takes around 1 minute for your attention to be lost, so find a place where you can study that’s definitely free of distractions like your bedroom, an office, or a cubicle at the library.
It turns out that not only does your brain have the ability to change and improve, but the process isn’t actually as difficult as you may have originally thought. So if you’re ready to unlock the full potential of your memory and your mind, simply follow the tips above in order to keep your brain fit, active, and completely healthy.
