Building the perfect home for your family can be overwhelming due to the increasing cost of building material and property. What you decide to build may depend on the size of your family and how frugal you would like to be. If you have plenty of money to blow, then you may end up building a very large home however if you are on a tight budget, a smaller home may be more feasible. A family of three doesn’t necessarily need a five-bedroom four-bathroom home. Some individuals enjoy living in a tiny home and having more money for enjoyable activities. Whatever you decide to do, there are definitely many options out there.
What is your budget?
The first thing to consider is your budget. Depending on where you live will depend on the median home price. Of course, the cost to build a home will also depend on the area you are located, the contractor prices, and how big or small the home is going to be. Houses in the Northeast tend to cost a lot more than houses in the South, it may be beneficial to research the area you are looking to build prior to building.
What does your home need?
Find a good architect to help you with the planning process. It is important to figure out the needs of every member of the family living in the home. Do you want your home all on one level or two stories? Do you have someone with a disability living in the home that needs wider doors and lower cabinets? Are there children in the home and you would like the bedrooms close together are all something to think about. Make sure you also design the bedrooms right. It’s important to place the master bedroom close to the children’s bedrooms in the event of an emergency so you can reach them quickly. If you have more than one child, you can utilize bunk beds with draws attached leaving more floor space for playtime. It may also be feasible to provide carpet in the children’s bedroom for safety in the event of a fall from the bed. Once you find out what everyone wants in the home, you can work with an architect to create the perfect modern house plans for your home.
Once you tell the architect what you want, they will help design the home visibly and connect the dots. If you have a certain size of the home in minds such as 2,500 sq ft or 1,200 sq ft or a 400 ft mini house the architect will be able to help you achieve your goals in the blueprints. Many families these days are opting for an open plan layout to monitor children more closely. It is easier to monitor kids from an open concept kitchen, dining room, living room than a home that is separated by walls. It will make you feel more relaxed in the long run knowing you made a great choice choosing an open concept plan.
Choose aesthetics
Have you always wanted bamboo flooring, timber flooring, or tile throughout the house? Well, now’s your chance to make that move. Once the builders start the frame, you will have to start making these decisions quickly as the building process can move pretty quickly depending on the size of the home. If you have always wanted an inground pool, now’s your chance to meet with the pool guy and make that happen. Some other things you will need to make decisions on are paint color, vanities, doors, appliances, cabinets, countertops, and what you would like for heating. Some use forced hot air, radiant heating system, geothermal, wood-burning stove, pellet stove, or gas stove. There are many choices to make and I’m sure your time at the home improvement store will be well spent.
Regardless of what you choose to build for a home, take your time choosing the architect to ensure they are going to be a great member of a team to build your new home. The home building process can be long and tedious or short and sweet depending on the contractors. However, the outcome is completely worth it. It is a lifelong investment that is a great reward once complete.
