Parents play a crucial role in developing their child’s potential. Giving their children the best milk, sending them to the most expensive school and teaching them life skills are not the only ways to raising smart kids. Holistic development is one important key to making a child grow to be smart individuals. Strive to develop your child holistically so that he will grow not just as an academically intelligent person, but also as someone who is smart enough to realize that intelligence is not the sole determiner of success. Below are some tips to help parents raise smart kids.
Develop your child’s social skills
Parents must start developing their child’s skills at home. Studies have shown that teaching social skills during the kindergarten years positively impact the child’s success as he reaches early adulthood. Give children more opportunities to play with other kids, share what they have with their friends and help others whenever they can. Developing one’s social skills greatly helped them become good listeners, positive speakers and smart thinkers.
Develop your child’s interest in academics
Parents must develop their child’s enthusiasm for academics. They must be made to realize at an early age that academic learning is fun. Parents must show genuine interest in knowing how their child is performing academically in school. If there are certain areas in academics that their child is having difficulty with, parents must do something about it right away. For example, consider hiring a math tutor if your child is struggling in mathematics. Ignoring the kids’ difficulties in school may only lead them to become frustrated. But, with the help of a tutor, they will be able to restore their confidence once again in learning about that specific subject.
Know how your child learns better
Every child has a different way of learning things faster. There are kids who learn better through listening. While others learn faster through watching demonstrations of what they need to learn. Parents must learn the differences between a visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learner. Remember that every child is unique as well as his way of learning things.
Don’t be overprotective
Children must be taught to solve problems on their own. They have to learn how to find solutions to the issues they’re facing. They may find themselves struggling for answers or solutions. But, they will surely learn well from their own experiences. Parents, on the other hand, must be willing to guide their children but steer clear from any tendency of solving problems for their kids. Parents must know how to draw the thin line between protecting, guiding and giving their children the freedom to use their own minds when solving many issues in life.
Develop your child’s sense of responsibility
One way to develop your child’s sense of responsibility is to assign with him chores that he must accomplish on a regular basis. This is important for their overall development. Research shows that teaching kids the value of accomplishing chores at home can do wonders in helping them achieve success as they reach adulthood. As soon as your child reaches three or four, teach him the value of being responsible by assigning him chores that suit his age.
Pay attention when they’re asking questions
Never let your child feel that his questions are nonsense. No matter how busy you think you are, always take the time to listen well to your child’s question. This way, you will be able to teach him the value of listening to others while also encouraging him to be curious and inquisitive. Also, take the time to ask them questions. This is one way of letting them realize that you as a parent is also interested to know about their interests and things that matter most to them.
Most of all, parents should live the kind of life worthy of emulation and inspiration. Keep in mind that parents can either be a great source of encouragement or frustration. But, if parents are armed with tips such as the ones mentioned above, children will more likely to draw strength and inspiration from them as they grow to be smart individuals.
