A beige picnic basket, a red checked sheet to sit on, an umbrella, some story books, dad’s fishing rod and bucket, our hiking shoes and the smell of chicken sandwiches and pretzels on the back seat of the car. That pretty much summed up our quick weekend getaway when we were kids.

Family vacations get etched in your mind by some associations or another, and it’s an experience every child should have. So how do you make a memorable travel experience for your kid? Where do you go? What do you do? We will give you some pointers which will enable you to choose just the right destination. So what are you waiting for? Tick – Northern Lights Finland off your bucket list.

Where to head off to?

This is one point which will drive you crazy till you get a complete consensus of the entire clan. One might want to go to a beach, while the other may want to experience the mountains, kids may wish to an adventure whereas you are looking to relax and rejuvenate.

There is another aspect you might want to consider if you wish to make it a budget vacation or you are alright to splurge or meet the two somewhere in between. Better would be to pick a place that is new and unexplored and has a uniqueness to it that the whole family can enjoy.

What can we do there?

Once you have a fair idea of what kind of place you want to go to, research thoroughly about the area in advance. Don’t be in a situation where you land up there and then realise there isn’t much to do. Chalk out an itinerary which involves a lot of activities keeping in mind the individual people travelling with you and also activities that you can enjoy as a group.

You don’t want to pick a place that has nothing to entertain you further especially if you are travelling with kids. Put a spin on the entire vacation and choose a place which has some annual event going on like the food fests in Iceland or Germany, cultural escapades of Africa or Europe, or the usual Christmas and New year’s events. It will be an exceptional experience for your children to experience cross cultures and traditions.

How far are you willing to travel?

While travelling with your family, one of the most important things to consider is how you are going to reach your vacation destination and is it approach friendly? Consider the feasibility of the place concerning climate first. What will the weather be like? Will your kids adapt easily? Next up on the list is what mode of transport you are going to pick.

Flights, trains, buses or self-drive cars can be the options you consider after evaluating the travel temperament of your family and what will give them the most comforting journey. You can use a combination of modes of transport to reach your destination but be well planned with your timings and routes that you decide to embark upon. According to the directions, have your kids’ meal timings and break stops co-ordinated. If they haven’t done much travel before, it is advisable to go easy on them and keep distances shorter.

The fact of the matter is no matter where you land up, spend oodles of quality time with each other. Make sure you and your family have a new experience on every vacation and ensure that you embrace and connect with each travel tunnel you go through.
