Bedwetting is a common name given to enuresis or nocturnal enuresis. These problems of wetting the bed while sleeping by kids are faced by many parents and children. The age of children can vary from five to fifteen. During daytime, the children are aware about an urge for urination whereas in night time the bladder filling are not recognized and felt by them. Kids bedwetting is an unintentional accident that occurs due to deep sleep or other factors.

The Categories of Bedwetting

On the basis of the level of wetness, enuresis can be categorized in two types. Their types can be enlisted as-

  • Primary Enuresis: This category of bedwetting is tagged to the children who can’t stay dry at night. You can rarely find them dry. Primary Enuresis is chronic in nature.
  • Secondary Enuresis: In case of secondary enuresis bedwetting series are aborted for longer time period and the child remains dry at night. The rare bedwetting incidents are mostly due stress in rare cases this is an involuntary action.

Reasons Behind Bedwetting

Bedwetting is not a random problem that is faced by all the kids. Boys are encountered to enuresis more than girls holding a ratio of 4 to 1. There are various causes of kids bedwetting and parents are ought to be known about it.

  • Hereditary pass on: Kids bedwetting are genetically transferred from father or mother. If the father or mother or both of them suffered from bedwetting, then these traits are sure to be transferred to the next heir as well.
  • Lack of Control: Many a time kids are not able to know if the bladder is filled or empty, and possess no control over the flow due to slow reflex rate.
  • Deep sleep: While in deep sleep, kids remain unaware and unnoticed by bladder overflow causing bedwetting.
  • Bladder issue: The slow maturing rate and small size of bladder can trigger release of urine frequently.

Less medical reasons like diabetes, pin worms, kidney failures are noticed behind kids bedwetting.

What is The Treatment?

Maximum children outgrow of bedwetting themselves. With growth, the muscles get stronger and so does the bladder grow mature enough to work at its full capacity. No more deep sleeps are entertained which leads to sensing of bladder movements. Still, there are cases which require treatment and measures to get rid of enuresis.

The treatment can be behavioral or medical in accordance to its severity and parent’s choice. Medical treatment involves use of two common drugs:

  • Imipramine (Tofranil): Anti-depressant in nature, such drugs are offered to the kids to change their sleeping patterns. The situation is in control until the drugs are in use later things get back to the square one. It is accompanied by side effects too henceforth are in regular check by the physician.
  • Desmopressin acetate: These drugs are employed and given to reduce the amount of urine formation therefore lesser the chances of bladder overflow.

Behavioral treatments are best to opt and plenty of them can be lined as:

  1. Eating habits: Have less juicy and liquid substances to lower urine formation and overfilling of bladder during night, especially after dinner.
  2. Bedwetting Alarms: Set alarms at regular intervals in night so that your child can wake up for urination.
  3. Control training: Ask your child to control his urination during day time. This increases the capacity of the bladder and ensures that they do not urinate as often as they used to.
